As you know last week California got hit with a big storm from an earthquake over sees of all places. The Historic Nelson Ranch is doing great, but there are leaves all over the place. The storm came form the South, which is unusual. We lost power for a day, but had power up and running in minutes from our ranch generators. The following days have been extra warm and it is muggy, like being in the South.

Geez and a show almost got rained out in September.

Really weird weather conditions.

Anyhow the arena conditions are perfect and ridable. Send me some copies of photos if you have them,

My friend Kathy emailed me the new Version 3 of Snap it. This is a program that takes a snap shot of your computer screen. This software you can find it at http://www.digeus.com/products/snapit/snapit_screen_capture_3_5.html
is easy to use and quick, before you had to do a variety of things to capture the screen shot and then even more to upload them to Adobe Photo Shop. This screen capture software makes the process seemless quick and easy. Definatly recommend it for others that are looking to capture screen shots. They even let you try the software for 2 weeks for free.

Our 2009 HNR Western Shows is an Open All Breed Show with added AQHA - American
Quarter Horse Association approved classes that count for AQHA points. These are open
shows, so any horse can show. But only AQHA registered horses can enter the AQHA
classes added. There are daily highpoints for the Open classes as well as the AQHA
classes. All classes are PAC approved which is Pain Alternative Competitions. So you
can enter any of the non AQHA classes and if you have a double registered APHA/
AQHA, that horse can go in the AQHA classes as well.

Historic Nelson Ranch English Horseback Riding Lesson

The Historic Nelson Ranch is proud to offer "Just Ducky Horse
Training" by Bristol Lee. We are now taking sign ups for our fall
English horseback riding program. For girls 6 to 16 for girls
interested in caring for and riding horses. Participants will explore
a variety of equestrian activities and learn horsemanship, stable
management, horse handeling, horse safety and care, while
making new friends. We emphasize team work and teach
leadership skills

Children will learn the different parts of the English tack and how
they can be changed. For Example: the bit of the bridle; learning
about different types of bits and for what discipline each is used.
As well as what effect each one of them has on the horse and his
performance. They will also learn saddles fit and use as well as
martingales and safety equipment like brushing boots and
bandages.

Education includes basic veterinary. Bandaging of legs, causes
and treatments of colic as well as basic cleaning of wounds and
what to do to avoid your horse getting various illnesses. We will
also have a farrier to come and shoe when the children are
available to allow them to see how the horses are shod, and sized
for shoes.

Riders will learn seat and balance and basic riding.

Riders at the end will be quized and tested and awards to best
stable management and other caregories.

My Riding Program is a 4 week course and horseback riding
lessons are tailored to the ability of the rider.

Bring your own horse, or use one of our safe school horses.
Beginning students can expect to learn proper equitation, how to
walk, halt, steer, and trot. More experienced riders can expect to
work on refining their equitation both at the trot and canter,
adding in poles and small jumps.

The Historic Nelson Ranch English schooling show went well. Our judge was Clint Sawyer was recommended by Nancy Gannon and the exhibitors really enjoyed him. He did an excellent job. He helped by offering suggestions and explaining why and how he pinned the jumping classes. Sabrina Brown won the 13 and under and Laura Longhorst won the daily 18 and older. Alana Courville brought her kids and Jess did a great job showing. You could not ask for better weather. We added classes including ground rails and lots of trot and walk classes for riders and horses just getting used to the show ring. The Historic Nelson Ranch has partnered with locals for a Yolo County community garden as a resource for local non profits including No Barriers and working cooperativly with RCD and NRCS. No barriers is a great local program for adults with disabilites and services approximatly 50 clients. The plants and equipment have been generously donated by local businesses including OSH, Home Depot and the Wayfarer Center.

Groundsel (Senecio Vulgaris) Can Kill Your Horse - Check Your Fields & Hay

Groundsel is popping up everywhere in Yolo County. From the plant being in areas of the city, I have seen it growing around Staples, Taco Bell and other parking lots to fields in the county.

Kathy asked me to pass this along: Sadly in the past several years, several horse owners in Solano and Yolo counties have lost their horses to pyrrolizidine alkaloid poisoning from Groundsel (Senecio Vulgris) contamination of hay. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids also the poisonous agent in Fiddleneck, causes irreversible liver damage in horses and cattle. Sheep are more resistant. A horse needs only to consume a cumulative amount of fifty pounds to suffer fatal toxicity. While some animals may showchronoic weight loss, decreased appetite or depression, many present as acute colics, down horses or neurological cases right before succumbing to liver failure.

Groundsel typically is found in the first cutting of alfalfa, but can appear in later cuttings, combination hays, such as pasture grass mixes and even grain hays. If cut in the immature stage before the identifying little white thistle heads appear, it may be extremely hard to recognize in cut hay/ The leaves are the same color as alfalfa. The weed produces a small yellow flower and the stems are smooth or hairy but have no stickers. The above information was provided by Kathy Jones, D.V.M.

The plant looks almost identical to the dandelion. When growing in the field, it is waxy and if you cut or spray it tends to go to head. So if you find it, spray a broad leaf early or pull it out and burn it or put it in a tied trash bag and dispose of it. When I have seen it in hay, you can only tell by looking for the little puffs of white. Your safest bet locally is to only buy third cutting or later alfalfa and to have it tested by the California food safety lab in Davis. I have seen it in some bales as a large stalk with purple ting to it.

We have experienced the devastation felt by some of our customers stories from told at the tack store. Some local barns that have had this in their hay, have lost all of their horses and by the time they found it and realized what it was, it was to late. They said their horses lost weight and eventually could not chew.

Ill. Swollen lymph nodes beneath your jaw are common in human medicine. While they are not usually a major concern to physicians, mention it to an equine veterinarian that your horse has large swellings on their side of its neck and their reaction is quite opposite.

“Strangles is a highly contagious disease in horses affecting the submandibular and retropharyngeal lymph nodes,” Luke Borst, a pathology resident at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

A New vaccine - time studying this ancient equine ailment and is working on a new vaccine to prevent it from wreaking havoc in boarding barns across the country.

The bacteria Streptococcus equi causes the infection and can easily be transmitted from horse to horse by nasal secretions the first sign of the disease is fever, what owners usually notice are enlarged lymph nodes that eventually burst.

Two issues that require attention to control strangles. “First, we need to identify individual carriers,” explained Borst, and “secondly, we need an efficacious vaccine that has the potential to eradicate the disease.”

Several vaccines are already on the market, but their safety/ffectiveness is controversial. Primary concerns Borst’s research has highlighted is vaccines appear to be responsible for unacceptable complications in horses younger than 6 months Young horses are more prone to develop a severe form of strangles, and they are the age group that needs added protection additionally, with the current strangles vaccines, vaccinated horses cannot be differentiated from an infected animal via a blood test during an outbreak. Borst is hoping to create a vaccine “flagged” so it is distinguishable from infected animals. Less likely to get sick - He has been able to delete the virulence genes in his vaccine to make it less likely an animal will get sick from vaccination. James Brendemuehl an assistant professo, University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana has treated several cases of strangles over the years, including an outbreak in 150 mares with foals, and more recently in a herd of yearlings.He explained that, “strangles is really a slang term from the fact that in some cases lymph nodes become so swollen the animal can’t breath.”Despite how unsightly an abscessed lymph node looks, it is generally recommended antibiotics not be administered because they may complicate disease progression. “We use anti-inflammatory drugs to help keep temperatures down, but usually we let the disease run its course,” noted Brendemuehl. Identifying carriers
strangles is not usually fatal in older horses and most animals become immune to the bacteria after one exposure, the major problem is identifying carriers. Once a horse has contracted strangles, they continue to shed the disease for several weeks and sometimes longer. previously infected horse has had three repeat tests come back negative, the animal may still be infective to others, Brendemuehl mentioned stress, such from shipping, tends to make outbreaks more likely, and they frequently see more cases in the winter because horses are more often housed in close quarters. Jumper Reported Missing After Cross-Country Haul

Grand Prix jumper Good Guinness has been reported missing after his California-based trainer, Patrick Seaton, shipped him to New York to try to sell him on the East Coast.

Jumper Good Guinness went missing and was replaced by an imposter, according to trainer Patrick Seaton.

According to Seaton, the horse disappeared at some point between Sept. 8, 2008, when Good Guinness stepped onto a commerical shipper's trailer, and Sept. 14, when a dark brown horse purported to be Good Guinness arrived at Frank Madden's farm in New York.

The horse that showed up at Madden's farm was only identified as an imposter last week, when Seaton traveled to the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla., and saw the horse that was supposed to be Good Guinness.

The imposter and Good Guinness do bear some similarities: both are dark brown and have small stars. However, the imposter has a scar on his right hind and is missing his front teeth. Over the winter the horse at Madden's farm competed in shows, but on the children's circuit, and he was not living up to the potential of a Grand Prix jumper.

When asked why a red flag wasn't raised when the horse wasn't living up to expectations, Madden said, "It happens a thousand times that people tell you a horse is better than it is. I watched the horse on YouTube and it was a dark brown horse. The horse that arrived matched the description on the passport, I had no reason to think it wasn't the horse."

"You'd never expect something like this to happen," said trainer Ali Nilforushan, who acted as the agent between Seaton and Madden. "It's baffling."

Seaton said the owner of Good Guinness has contacted the FBI. Seaton is asking anyone with information to contact him at 415/797-0186. Good Guinness is a 12-year-old, 17 hand, dark brown Irish Sport Horse. He has a star with roan edges.

According to Madden, a veterinarian yesterday found a European microchip implanted in the imposter horse. No other information is yet available on this horse's identity.

Welcome to our December Cover Feature. Most people who own horses keep them not to show exclusively, and while it is always nice to think of having a champion this-or-that, most people own horses for companionship and lifestyle
reasons. Our featured stallion this month is an example of that ideal. He was shown some and is accomplished in the show arena, but mostly his value was not there, it is for what else he has to offer. His name is SQUEEZY BLUE JUAN, and he is a foundation bred Quarter Horse.
He is owned by Ted Wilson and his wife Brenda Cedarblade.
Brenda also owns the Historic Nelson Ranch, a full service equestrian center, and the well known Tack Warehouse,
both in Woodland, California.
Ted purchased SQUEEZY BLUE JUAN for his breeding.
He is foundation bred, royally. On the top, he goes back to JOE HANCOCK twice. He also goes back to LEO. On the bottom, SQUEEZY BLUE JUAN goes back to THREE BARS three times and also to LEO.
Ted thinks it is very important he goes back to the great foundation sires like LEO and HANCOCK. “He goes back to some of the real foundation horses.”
They purchased him to breed to Tedʼs mare in order to produce a roping horse. That is where his interest lies. SQUEEZY BLUE JUAN is 22 years old and is blue roan. He was bred by Patti McCoin of Pendleton, Oregon. He was also shown by Patti McCoin. She is a barrel racer and a multiple
barrel circuit winner. She sold him and his next owner used him for years to produce rodeo horses, ropers and barrel racers. His half brother went to the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) 5 years ago. He has a sister who is winning the 4D Barrel Racing Circuit in Texas.
SQUEEZY BLUE JUAN was a ranch horse and used in roping competition, team roping in the area where his owner lived, and won plenty of jackpots. He has a Register of Merit in Heading and Heeling. But mostly he was used for producing foals for ranch use and roping activities.
We were introduced to him during our visit for the interview for this feature. Ted brought him out and we were impressed with his disposition and the amount of bone he has. He also has nice, good sized feet, and kind eyes. He appears to be a laid back individual and was very relaxed around total strangers.
“With my rope horses, we try to get enough bone under them... and enough foot under them. Heʼs a pretty good guy to have around.” Brenda added “Heʼs not real studdy. The babies are like him, I can walk him, lead him and do whatever...
He is easy to work with and his babies are like that too.”
Ted is planning to breed a double bred DOC BAR mare to Squeezy. “He has good, thick bone. He throws a lot of bone, and a lot of color.”
Ted added he is approved with the APHA and can sire foals that can be registered as Paints. According to both Ted and Brenda, he produces mostly blue and red roan foals.
His previous owner reckons he has produced around 135 foals but they donʼt know exactly because he was turned out with a band of mares on a ranch in Northeast Oregon that is nearly 1000 acres in size.
His colts have gone to the NFR in Barrel Racing. Many ranchers in Oregon, where he came from, used him to produce
quality ranch and using horses. Ted thought some of his colts have also gone to the NFR in roping.
The Historic Nelson Ranch has existed since 1868. It was originally named the Nelson Land and Stock Company. That is when the 2 story, red brick main residence was built. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The Nelson family raised cattle and farmed also. The property came down through several generations of the Nelson family until it was donated to the University of California in the early 1970ʼs. Brenda purchased 20 acres from the remaining
estate in 2000 with the goal of developing that into a full service horse show and boarding facility. The original ranch was large, 3,000 thousand acres. When Brenda purchased her 20 acres, all that existed on it was the old house and it really was down to just the outer walls and the roof framework.
The roof itself was gone. The project to restore the house is ongoing while they operate the ranch and continue to develop it. The house is red brick Victorian / Italianate and Brenda was told it is only one of two in the U.S. which are brick with a gabled roof. They have a new roof on it now and all the brick walls have been repointed by a restoration specialist.
The facility has 5 show arenas, including one under the cover of a free span, structural steel building. There is a pleasure arena, jumping arena, trail arena, and warm up arena among the 5. They have 60 stalls available for boarding.
One aspect of the arenas which is very important is the footing. Brenda says since the ranch had been farmed for so many years before she changed it over to an equestrian facility,
the soil is sandy river bottom. “The great thing is it is old river bottom that has been in grain. In Yolo county, most areas are clay so when it rains you canʼt ride until Spring. Our footing will drain off within 2 to 3 days after a heavy storm.” Riders can use the covered arena in the meantime. “That was really the selling point of the property for me.”
To complement the historic nature of the ranch, many elements of the barn and facility are vintage or recycled. There is a stained glass panel mounted in one of the breezeways,
many of the beams supporting the roof of the stall area are recycled from previous buildings along with many other elements to give the barn a pleasant, warm atmosphere. But donʼt think of it as rustic because it is not, it is actually very neat and modern.
Stalls are large and airy. The stalls on the inside of the aisle way all have windows to the arena which afford a good view and let extra light into each stall.
Boarding services range from full service to turn-out. Since the ranch is only 2 miles north of Woodland, they have many folks from around the area who prefer to board there. The access is very convenient coming from any direction.
Boarding services range from self clean stalls to full care. Brendaʼs staff does feed all boarding horses and there are no options where the client feeds their own horse. There is a range of feed available from Alfalfa, Oat, and Oat mix to grass hay. Custom feeding and caring services are available at separate fees. Julia Pariser specializes in Grand Prix Jumpers and also Hunters. She was trained in Europe. Julia bases her training on dressage fundamentals and also offers training in dressage.
She has won numerous year end championships and prestigious wins like the $3,000 mini prix of Fresno, 2nd in the Woodside $8,500 money class, 2nd in the $5,000 Pebble Beach Special and year end Junior Jumper Champion and Res Ch of 2001.
Ted Butler trains reining horses from start to finish. He is a Top 5 champion twice in the West Coast Horse Reining
Horse Association. He was also a Rookie Professional Finalist at the National Reining Horse Associationʼs (NHRA) Affiliate Finals, Oklahoma City.
Ted has worked for and trained with some top reining horse trainers including Jeremy Gates, NRHA Limited Open Res Ch, and Brian Bell, six time World Champion.
Sabrina Hernandez offers Western Pleasure, Halter, Horsemanship and Showmanship lessons. Her students range from youth, just starting out to advanced riders. She specializes in training for AQHA, APHA and all around show horses.
The Historic Nelson Ranch produces events, as well as renting the Horse show part. They have booked AQHA, APHA and many different types of club shows and clinics.
The Historic Nelson Ranch also supports and sponsors lots of local shows for 4H, California State Horsemenʼs Association.
“Those are the kids who are getting started...” It is Brendaʼs belief they are the ones who will go on to show and own horses the rest of their lives. By supporting them, she has found they support the Historic Nelson Ranch and the Tack Warehouse also. “I have had kids who started in 4H who are now parents with their own kids riding and showing.”
Besides owning SQUEEZY BLUE JUAN, and Historic Nelson Ranch, Brenda owns the Tack Warehouse in Woodland,
CA. She started her business in 1991. The business grew from an operation out of the back of her truck through two smaller storefront locations to the current store it is, occupying
13,000 square feet. Except for a small hair salon at one corner, Tack Warehouse occupies the entire building at 917 Main Street in Woodland.
It is fair to say Tack Warehouse is a complete supplier of items for the horse owner and rider with both English and Western, including high end showing tack, saddles, and showing apparel. Also available is a very large selection
of gifts, vet supplies, cards, home decor and even some furniture. A mere word description will not do justice, it is necessary to see how much is available.
What strikes me particularly is the depth of the selection
of all items. You donʼt have just one to choose from in almost every item, you have many choices... Many of the big box retailers who sell horse supplies will carry a few items but not at Tack Warehouse. Brenda has worked very hard to develop an amazing array of items to suit the taste of a very wide range of horsemen. “Where we have been able to compete is by carrying a hundred different items, rather than 100 of one item.”
Apparel is the most significant item that Tack Warehouse
has enlarged. With the withdrawal of some large chain tack outfits, local and family owned tack and riding apparel stores are the logical choice for horsepeople to find their riding
and equestrian apparel. Tack Warehouse is stocked to the ceilings (literally) with English, Western and general apparel for ranchers and horsemen.
Atmosphere at the Tack Warehouse is warm and friendly. There is enough different merchandise to keep one busy looking carefully for hours. As you browse the different
departments, you will find plenty of surprises.

Horse breeders are arguing at the state Capitol this session that they are in the agriculture business, not the leisure business.

David Dayon breeds thoroughbred race horses in St. Michael. He told the House Agriculture, Rural Economies and Veterans Affairs Committee on Monday that his industry suffers from the misconception that horse owners are purely recreational.

“There’s a lot more to this industry than two or three horses in a back yard. But that seems to be the identity that we always fall under,” Dayon said.

Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Delano, has sponsored a bill that would classify horses as livestock. An amended form of Emmer’s bill passed the Agriculture committee on a voice vote. The Senate Agriculture and Veterans Committee has scheduled to debate companion legislation on Tuesday.

The bill is being tracked by the Humane Society of the United States. The Agriculture committee on a voice vote removed a sentence from the bill that concerned animal advocacy groups. The deleted sentence said that horses “may be used for meat, hides, and animal by-products.”

The bill that passed the committee would regard operations such as horse training, breeding and boarding as an “intensive agricultural use.” The bill’s next stop is the House floor.

After the committee debated the bill, Emmer took the opportunity to do a little horsing around.

“If anybody votes no, I’d appreciate they vote ‘no’ instead of ‘nay,’” Emmer said.

Trying to find the perfect boarding stable for your horse?

You want the best horse care for your budget and also the convenience There is no perfect horse boarding facility or stable. A priority should be your horse’s health and safety. Look for a horse boarding stable that is neat and clean with safe fences and an overall groomed appearance with good board fences and no nails sticking out or barbed wire.

Look in the stalls. There should be not be matts torn up or displaced, nails sticking out and boards missing or chewedup. Look at the waterers, and a barn should be well ventilated and have a lot of light. Look in the stalls at the stall bedding. Is there enough of the bedding to prevent sores, are therestall matts and it is the bedding the kind normally choose for your horse.
Find out if the horse stalls are cleaned regularly.

Check the tie areas, cross ties and height of the barn. Ask which vaccinations are required to board the horse.

Talk to the workers and get a feeling for their knowledge of horses. The stall cleaner is thefirst in line with the health, safety and care of your horse. They should know the health of horsesand know when to call in a vet or barn manager.

The hay and hrose feed andschedule the abrn offers is important. A smaller sized portion may work for a pleasure horse, but you may need more if you have a performance horse. Ask what is a normalportion and if they will grain the horse.

Do the tack rooms have a large enough area and security should meet your tack and saddlesituation. Look and see the amount of storage and do you have an individual locker or shared room. Is there a full restroom or are port-a-potty.

Look for a horse barn that has riders with similar. Read the contracts and if the stable doesn’t have one that is not good as there should be barn rules through the contract. Contract should let the barn call a veterinarian if the horse is injured or sick especially if the horse owner cannot be contacted.

It does not matter which type of horse or syle of riding you do. If you will be spending time with your horse at a ranch or horse facility or just taking lessons the atmosphere and horse trainer are part of the package. Riding, boarding cost money and you should have fun and enjoy the place you are at as much as your horse.

When trying to find a boarding stable or barn to house your horse in a barn, you should look at the cleanliness and atmosphere of the people at the barn.

A great way to find a place that will work for the horse and rider you can find the barn on the Internet or phone book, but I find it far better to get a persons recommendations for barns they like in teh area, and then visit the horse ranch or horse facility. Soemtimes, if you call before showing up, the place will be spruced up, dogs put up ... and not indicitive of what it is like on a daily basis. Once you get there you can request to find the person incharge of the barn manager or ask to find the trainer. If they are giving lessons, watch and see if you like what they are teaching the horse and rider. Some ranches are gated, so you may need to have an appointment. Weekends are usually the best time to visit because this gives you a good idea of the amount of people that will be in the arenas and level of activity for the facility boarding your horse.

You will need to find out all of the costs from both the barn and if your are going to take lessons or put your horse in training, the costs involved with that. Horses and horse boarding are not cheap, so be prepared.

Get the cost to board your horse and what it includes; ie; turnout, blanketing, stall cleaning, if horses pens are cleaned daily - 7 days a week, feeding and how much they are feed, if there are additional costs if the horse needs additional feed, cost for suppliments... If there are any hidden fees or requirements. If there are veterinary clinics or mandated veterinary services and what is the cost. Sometimes a cheaper way is to use the trainers horses or lease a horse. Ask if there are school horses available. what board includes, and the turn-out schedule. You can ask for the name of the barn horse farrier... Get the hourse of operation for the barn, if they are open 7 days a week, what are the horse barn rules and arena rules.

Then check the stalls and barns. Are the horse stalls and stable clean? Are the horses waterers clean? Do they have automatic waterers or do you have to have water buckets filled. Talk to people in the bars and get their opinion of the horse facility or horse stable. See what they like or don't like about the care of the horse the barn provides etc...

Get the cost of the horseback riding lessons, prices involved in showing including transportation cost, day fees, if there are graining fees, stalls at shows and any other costs. Sometimes the trainers charge you for their hotels and the hotels for the show labor. Find out how many horse riding lessons you get for what rate, if they are group of private, You can also get charged if they have grooms at the show and for the grooms housing... See how there horses look if they are well groomed and if the horses are well behaved.

On average stalls with full care for the horses are about $375 and up. Training varies, contact trainers for their rates. Taking a horse back riding lesson or clinic with the trainer is a great way to see if you will get along with the trainer or horse. If you try a group lessons, you can gage how much attention the trainer will give you and your hrose, watch to see if the trainer makes you feel uncomfortable by pushing you to much or not giving you or your horse a challange or enough to do. Make sure you are learning something. Do not be afraid to tell teh trainer if you feel they are pusing you to fast, making you jumo higher than you are comfortable, if you feel unsafe on the horse etc...

The first step in deciding where to find a boarding stable for your horse is to decide what you need. Does your horse require stabling or can it live out on pasture with a run-in shelter? Does it need any special care or feeding. And what do you need to enjoy your horse? The Historic Nelson Ranch will have a kids summer horse back riding camp. It will be limited to 10 children. Kids will be busy all day and we will give them as much horsey-information as possible. The Historic Nelson Ranch is located in Woodland Ca near Sacramenso, Davis, Winters and Capay (Norther Ca, USA).The daily activities for pony camp include:Allocate ‘their’ ponies/horses. Suiting the horse or pony to their riding ability. Stable Management will be the first thing and will include mucking out stables using shavings as well as straw or any other form of bedding. This will take about an houre and includes washing feed and water buckets. They will be responsible for tracking and desiging a feed program for their horses or ponies. Children will be expected to explain what types of feed each one gets and why. Also they will learn about horses and the difference between the various feeds. The second part is identifying and cleaning tack. This is essential for riding . They will be able to identify different parts of the tack and how they can be used o n the horse including the bit of the bridle. They will learn about different types of bits and for what discipline each is used and what effect different bits has on the horse and his performance. Saddles, martingales, saddle pads, horse boots. Part of the program is learning basic medical care and first aid. This will include bandaging, shoeing, worming schedule, vaccines etc... How to take care of wounds, hays and grains and also a farrier day, where a local farrier will show them and explain the art and importance of shoeing.Children will be responsible for grooming the horse at least once a day. This includes washing of manes and tails and the correct way to clip and pull manes and tails. By the end of teh class, the children will be judged on how they can demonstrate how a horse or pony should be turned out for a show, that will occur at the end of the camp. Kids will experience different disciplines including English and Western while they are on the camp as possible. For the riding program kids will learn balance, seat, and position. They will be expected to learn control of the horse. Skills will be learned on the linge line if necessary and they will play games that will be a fun way to learn control of the horse as well as rider skills. They will learn about different breeds, temperments of horses and even some information about stallions.Children will recieve awards at the end of the camp for most improved, high achievemnt, stable management skills and on the final day show the family will be invited to a horse show, where the kids can show off their newly learned skills.

Horse Trainer Looking For Horse Stable? We have a Horse Barn Available

Horse or Horses!

Historic Nelson Ranch has a horse barn / horse stable with box stalls and horse stalls with runs available for horse trainer. This horse stable is separate from the other horse barns. Stalls are $395 (13 x 13 box) - $425 (13 x 13 with oversized run). We are negotiable if you want to provide your own, horse feed, stall shavings and cleaning.

There is a trainers tack room and amenities. We have 5 horse arenas, large indoor arena. Horse riding arenas are maintained drug and watered, jumps available. There are 2 round pens and a hot walker. There is also 3- 1.5 acres for horse turnout pasture. The ranch has an automatic gate, so please call for an appointment.

The ranch footing is composed of sandy loom footing and arenas drain quickly after rain and horse facility is not muddy.

We have an exisiting Reining Horse trainer (NRHA) that starts colts and horses and Western Pleasure trainer that trains horses and offers children and adult riding lessons. We do not want a trainer that will duplicate what they do as they are wonderful!!!

You will have your own arena, barn and tack room to work from. Must provide references and contact us about other terms.

We also host rated horse shows and schooling English and Western horse shows. These are SAHJA Sacramento Area Hunter Jumper Association, AQHA - American Quarter Horse Association, APHA American Paint Horse Association, CCQHA Central California Quarter Horse Association, CSHA - California State Horsemans Association rated and are trying to get NRHA National Reining Horse Association rated horseshows.

The Historic Nelson Ranch is in Woodland California. Our horse barn is Northern California. We are 2 freeway exists from the Sacramento airport. The horse ranch is 9 miles north of Sacramento and close to Davis and West Sacramento. (2 miles off the I-5 freeway)

How to Pick Up A Green Horses Foot

A horse trainer should know to teach a horse to pick up its feet you can start by getting the horse accustomed to having a rope or other items dangled around his legs.

You can use a lunge line, preferable rolled.

Depending on the horse and the horses disposition, that might be enough for the day.

The next day, re-do dangling the rope. If the horses does not mine this, then begin wrapping the rope around one leg at a time until the horse accepts having something around his leg, and does not give it much attention.

The following day, hang the rope again aroundhis leg and hip. Be careful not to get kicked. If the horse does not mine, you can wrap the rope around the leg, and if he allows this, then coil it around the fetlock. You can then lift upward quietly. When the horse shifts his weight as if to lift the foot - then stop pulling. The horse will learn that what we want is for him to lift his foot and the reward is when the pressure is released.

Every day, start at the basic and re-do the early steps. You do not have to spend as much time on them or getting the horse used to being handleled.

Do not get mad at the horse if he chooses not to listen or wants to spook. This is normal for the horse to run from the movement of the rope dangling. You can make him work by having him trot around the round pen few times. This teaches him it is easier to engage the rope being used around him rather than work.

Handle your horse at your own risk, always use the services of an experienced horse trainer when handling a green horse.

How to Become a Horse Trainer

Being a horse trainer can be dangerous and time-consuming. You'll probably start off as an assistant to an established trainer. You'll begin by taking care of the horses, grooming, exercising and saddling; riding will come later, when you've proven your skills.

Get as much experience as you can in the different areas of working with horses - starting (teaching a horse the basics), breaking (or gentling), breaking bad habits, and finishing.

Learn as much as you can about horses. You'll need to have in-depth knowledge of equine health, psychology and personality.

Ride, ride, ride. Ride as many different horses as you can: all types, all ages, all levels and all events.

Prepare to be hurt. It's hard to find a trainer who hasn't been kicked, stepped on, thrown or bitten. Working with horses is dangerous, even as a hobby.

Spend as much time as you can with horses. The more experience you
have, the better you'll be.

Decide what type of horse training you want to specialize in: starting, rehabilitation (getting rid of bad habits), general all-purpose training, or specializing in one or several events.

Try to develop a strong show record in the area that you want to specialize in; this will help attract potential clients.

Be passionate about your career. If your heart isn't in it, the horses and the owners will sense it.
